Why is it important?

The term "community radio" indicates operation for a community ; normally a geographically defined community or a community of special interest. What is less obvious maybe, is that this community can be the community of volunteer participants who operate the radio station. There are significant benefits for that community.

Perspectives

Community radio has the unique status of a community development model; 1) within a listening audience and 2) also a volunteer workforce. Often the two groups occupy the same social space and are the same people. It is often difficult to disambiguate the audience from volunteer. The rhizomatic nature of community radio means social capital for all is omnipresent present because of the many entry and exit points of community radio.
