What is it about?

A number of studies have found that ADHD affects the functioning of the family, decreasing interactions and loyalty between ADHD patients and their families and increasing conflict between them. Expressed emotion (EE) is an empirical concept that is accepted as a barometer of the emotional climate at home. Perceived EE is a concept that evaluates the characteristics of the family members as perceived by adolescents. Thus, we consider perceived EE to express how adolescents with ADHD perceive the family climate.

Why is it important?

Assessment of perceived EE shows the importance of the multidimensional approach in the treatment of ADHD. In addition, the healthy development of self-esteem is thought to be important in terms of preventive mental health. Chronic illnesses such as ADHD, which are particularly susceptible to psychopathology during adolescence, show the importance of family relationships and social support. In our study, we emphasized that an integrated approach is necessary to decrease comorbidity in the treatment of ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder, and to evaluate the interactions of the entire family.
