Why is it important?

The LGBT population is historically underserved that have specific mental health and health needs. Educating healthcare personnel about these needs can lead to improved health outcomes in this population.

Perspectives

This is a very important issue, particularly in the military as the LGBT health needs weren't necessarily taken into consideration until the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." This policy created significant barriers military members that are part of the LGBT community in evidence-informed care to meet their healthcare needs. This article hopefully begins some discussion and provides some awareness to healthcare personnel about things to consider when caring this underserved population.
