What is it about?

This article analyzes how CNN and FoxNews portrayed the different groups involved in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, including the protesters, Mubarak and the government, and the Muslim Brotherhood. The Egyptian Revolution was part of the larger Arab Spring. The paper explains how the cable news organizations, which often are thought of being at odds with one another in terms of political coverage (left versus right), introduced and explained the different players in the Egyptian uprising during the Arab Spring. The article explains how certain groups were framed as friends of the United States while other groups were presented as enemies or dangerous to the United States. Included within the article is a discussion of how Muslims and people within the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region often are stereotyped and portrayed with a certain bias in U.S. news reports. The article examines which political ideologies are reflected within news coverage of the protesters, former president Hosni Mubarak and his government, and the Muslim Brotherhood.
