What is it about?

There is excessive utilization of expensive Radiology tests - MRI, CT, CT-PET and cardiac nuclear medicine. We used a program based on appropriateness criteria and interactions with nurses and physicians to guide ordering clinicians to order these tests more appropriately

Why is it important?

Decreasing inappropriate utilization resulted in lower radiation dose to patients and a significant cost savings to the medical system.

Perspectives

This is one of the only papers demonstrating that a radiology management program decreased utilization and the only one to our knowledge that shows an educational model that doesn't use denials met with success.
