What is it about?
Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) cables have numerous good characteristics, including high tensile strength, light weight, excellent fatigue resistance, and non-corrosiveness, so CFRP cables can be a good alternative to traditional steel cables in future applications. However, CFRP stay cables are possibly more prone to large amplitude vibrations under dynamic load because of their light weight and weak shear stiffness compared with steel cables. Hence, studying the dynamic properties of CFRP cables would be of great significance.

Why is it important?
This paper investigates both the parametric vibrations and forced vibrations of CFRP stay cables subjected to periodic motions of supports. The nonlinear vibration equations of stay cables subjected to three directions of excitations are formulated, and an accurate nonlinear dynamic model for both in-plane vibrations and out-of plane vibrations of stay cables is proposed. Particularly, the excitations at both supports are considered in this model.
