What is it about?
Neurovascular Structures at Risk during Hindfoot Arthrodesis with Retrograde Curved Nails
Featured Image
Why is it important?
The study points the plantar neuromuscular structures at risk at the entry-point of a tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) nail for hindfoot fusion. It shows that even using curved nails, the risk of injuring major neuromuscular structures is at least 70%.
Perspectives
It is our understanding that there is no true safe neurovascular zone and that the TTC fusions with nails should be performed through a more extensive plantar approach with careful dissection and retraction of the major neurovascular structures at risk, that includes Baxter Nerve, Lateral Plantar Artery and Lateral Plantar Nerve.
