What is it about?

Are all Africans alike - or is Africa a continent of infinite cultural diversity? I think the truth is somewhere in-between. But is that cultural diversity now linked to the different countries in Africa? In some cases, that seems to be the case. In others, it is not.

Why is it important?

National culture is an important element in defining the coherence of a nation. Knowledge about what cultural units are meaningful in which countries of Africa is not easy to obtain. Yet questions of ethnicity, culture and identity are important elements in many debates about Africa. This article provides a sketch of cultural similarities and differences in 35 African countries, using an approach derived from cross-cultural psychology.
