Why is it important?
Despite the fact that Bowen's theory is a seminal framework in family systems therapy there are few if any studies that have examined the impact of counseling on Bowen's differentiation of self.
Perspectives
The results are surprising in that clients experienced a moderate level of change in differentiation of self in a relatively short time period in counseling, which contradicts Bowen's assertion that significant change in counseling over the course of several years.
