What is it about?
I raise three theological issues in response to John Barclay's Paul and the Gift: 1) the relation between grace and ethics; 2) how Paul's theology of grace is related to his understanding of God; 3) whether Barclay deals adequately with the theme of justice in Paul.

Why is it important?
Barclay's Paul and the Gift is one of the most important studies of Paul in recent years. I explore some of the most significant theological themes raised by Barclay's proposal about "incongruous grace" in Paul.
Perspectives
Barclay's book has clarified many issues for me in Paul's theology of grace. It was an honour to be invited to contribute this response, as a way of saying thanks to John and acknowledging the tremendous influence (personally and through his writings) John has had on my thinking.
