What is it about?

The article suggests a way to use product features for analysis and development of engineering processes. The inclusion of product features makes it possible to obtain a better understanding of each process step, and the interdependencies between the process steps. This is done by visualizing the process flow and which product features are being applied in each process step. This provides a much better basis for improving the process flow, and reduce the number of control and feed back loops in the process flow. The method is tested in a case company, where it resulted in setting up engineering processes with significant reduced lead times, reduced resource consumption and improved quality of the specifications made in the engineering processes.

Why is it important?

In order to develop engineering processes you need to obtain an understanding of the product knowledge used in the different process steps in order to understand the content of the process steps, and the interdependencies between the process steps, and make this visual to the people working in the processes. This is done by visualizing the features used in each process step, and by suggestting a systematic approach for applying this insight for improving the engineering processes.

Perspectives

Including product knowledge, by adding product features used, when developing engineering processes makes it possible to visualize the content of each process step, and thus forms a basis for obtaining a far better understanding and visualizing of what is going on in the processes, which makes it possible to develop better process flows in engineering. This is highly relevant when working with e.g. implementation of PLM-systems and other IT tools to support the engineering processes.
