What is it about?

The addition of the stable isotope of hydrogen known as deuterium to some drugs may enhance their efficacy.

Why is it important?

The United States Food and Drug administration recently approved the first drug that contained deuterium atoms. This product can be administered fewer times per day and at a lower dose compared to the same drug that does not contain deuterium atoms.

Perspectives

There is a significant interest in developing deuterated versions of current drugs. Increased drug efficacy and increased medication adherence by patients may result from the availability of these new medications
