What is it about?

Human dignity is a fundamental experience, and work remains a major part of people's lives. This paper outlines the creation of a measure of workplace dignity, which can be used by researchers studying employees' lives and by companies seeking to improve the experiences of their employees on the job.

Why is it important?

Although many scholars or leaders discuss and make claims about worker dignity, no one has been able to measure dignity at work. Our 18-item scale is simple to administer and provides quantitative information on the levels of dignity--according to multiple facets--experienced by workers. Thus, those seeking to understand or affect the dignity of employees can now use a valid scale to assess and evaluate their efforts to do so.

Perspectives

Describing and emphasizing any workplace experience requires a shared definition and a valid way to measure the experience. For the first time, applied and scholastic questions about workplace dignity can now be addressed using a valid scale.
