What is it about?
Adolescents were offered the opportunity to participate in the AST study when they exhibited signs of agitation. They completed the Profile of Mood States-Short Form (POMS-SF) pre and post intervention. Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) was measured with significant improvement post intervention (p<0.001). POMS-SF subscales were all significantly improved no matter which device was used.

Why is it important?
Mental health issues are critical to student’s health. The “Adolescent Stress Treatment (AST) Study: A Cluster Randomized Trial” was a clustered randomized equivalency trial comparing the efficacy of two devices, the Energy Pod™ and Sleep Wing™. The EnergyPod™ is a device that provided a semiprivate acoustical, visual environment for rest, stress reduction, or sleep. The SleepWing™ is a smaller device offering similar benefits.
Perspectives
Collaborating with the co-authors on an important but vulnerable group, adolescents, really gave us the opportunity to decrease their stress and anxiety in a fun, innovative way. This study showed that an intervention was used to calm anxious and angry teens. The teens were able to stay in school, not be sent home, avoided a fight, and prevented suspension.
