What is it about?

This article introduces a new approach to teaching English vocabulary. In this approach, teachers teach English vocabulary to elementary and secondary school students by asking them to read specially designed stories with explicit and clear contexts to learn the meaning of each target vocabulary word. It is one promising method within the broad phases of learning.

Why is it important?

Diverse practices have been attempted to teach English vocabulary and their effects have been investigated. Those practices can benefit students' learning in different ways. The approach that this article proposes can increase their learning for the acquisition of base words and their meanings as it has equivalent features of explicit instruction and also provides meaningful contexts.

Perspectives

The use of DECENT stories that this article introduces is promising as our anecdotal experience demonstrated. One limitation is the current availability of those stories. Therefore, the authors will construct a web site where any voluntary authors can freely upload, store, and share their stories so that any educators can use them to teach their students.

This article demonstrates the power of stories and the ways stories can be used to teach vocabulary words effectively. The stories used in this study helped children to master academic vocabulary and maximize their achievement. This article provides significant ways to promote vocabulary development, and it aligns with the emphasis on academic vocabulary in edTPA.
