This research explored the transformational leadership traits of principal participants in the Northeast of the United States.

Why is it important?

Principals who are tasked with leading schools must balance the needs of many stakeholders while maintaining the value of instructional leadership. However, with this emphasis, less focus has been designated towards the transformational leadership capacities of school principals that emphasizes collaboration, cooperation, and the ability to implement change (Hauserman & Stick, 2013). Nonetheless, there is growing support for leadership through collegiality and collaboration rather than outdated, hierarchical models (Stein, 2016), suggesting that the role of the school principal must adapt to the needs of students and teachers (Kass, 2013) and that leaders accomplish this process through supportive listening and responsiveness (Leone et al., 2009). Through this research, we sought to understand how principals perceived transformational leadership.

Perspectives

This study highlighted the participants’ perceptions of transformational leadership through the five pillars of leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2013), the notion of change in transformational leadership and drew attention to the human element of leadership.
