What is it about?

This study was designed to clarify the association between pain and quality of life (QOL) of Japanese patients with cancer using a cancer-specific QOL scale (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer [EORTC] QLQ-C15-PAL) in 3 care settings (outpatient, inpatient, and palliative care units [PCUs]).

Why is it important?

To our knowledge, this is the first study that has investigated the association between pain and QOL in 3 care settings.

Perspectives

Our results showed that (1) pain had an association with physical and emotional QOL and (2) the association with pain was smaller in the PCU patients than the outpatients and inpatients. These are very valuable data obtained by the cooperation of many patients. I would like to try to provide the support that esteems the patient's subjective experience.
