What is it about?

We created a game to explore how people understand provenance. In order to make the game more appealing, we worked together with a group of artists. They developed the game design and did runtime management during the 6 months the game was live. Working together with artists helped make the game a success, but it also introduced some problems due to different overall goals. We reflect on these challenges in order to provide some helpful hints for future collaborations between researchers and artists.

Why is it important?

Past work on serious games / research games has mainly looked at it from the role of developers working together with the domain experts (e.g. the people that know about the topic). In this case, we change perspectives and look at how game design considerations might affect the serious content and goal of the game.

Perspectives

We really enjoyed working together with the artists, and we believe it added a lot to the game. So we very much recommend doing so! We hope our reflections encourage other people to do so as well, while being able to prevent some of the obstacles or to overcome them easily.
