What is it about?

Adult developmental psychology has found that rather than flat-lining around age 18, adults can continue to grow cognitively, emotionally, and interpersonally. This means there is developmental diversity in adulthood which can shape differences in how we make sense of our experiences. This paper examines how developmentally diverse adult learners make sense of pre-college English language learning experiences.

Why is it important?

The findings from this study show how development makes a difference in how adults experience learning, including ways of constructing motivation and navigating challenges. This in turn shows the need to consider developmental diversity in supporting adult learner persistence.

Perspectives

As someone passionate about supporting adult learners in fulfilling their goals and dreams, I hope this adult developmental perspective will help other adult educators support their own adult learners' persistence.
