Why is it important?
Personal branding workshops are common at universities, online, and in the workplace. We rarely question how the practice of developing an extended identity for marketing purposes or opening one's identity to be re-formed through social media affects young adult development. What should educators and trainers be considering when offering these courses?
Perspectives
We seldom take a critical look at the developmental ramifications of the workshops and training opportunities we offer. Personal branding is an identity development practice for the purpose of marketing. How does the practice influence young adults' development? The instrumental outcome of improving chances of finding a job, compelling in a time of uncertain employment, may divert our attention as educators from considering how the practice influences the development of young adults.
