What is it about?
My article explains what animal hoarding is and how the law currently applies to it. I argue that currently our laws do not help either the people suffering from hoarding disorder or the animals who are hoarded. Instead, we should think of a long-term management approach that assists people who hoard to recover.

Why is it important?
This is the first article that has critically analysed how the law in Australia applies to animal hoarding, and it sheds light on a very misunderstood mental disorder and on the complexities of helping such people using the law.
Perspectives
I hope this article raises awareness of the harm that animal hoarding causes and of the suffering that people who hoard animals face, and reduces the stigma and fetishisation of the disorder. I also hope it provokes some critical thinking about the law and the way animal hoarding is currently dealt with (ie. 'criminalised').
