What is it about?

Media coverage of a sports event influences people’s attitudes about it. This paper shows that men’s basketball events receive much more coverage in Polish newspapers than women’s events. Articles about men’s events are also longer and more sophisticated.

Why is it important?

Persistent disparity in the media coverage of sport makes women’s athletics appear less important. This puts women at a disadvantage when compared to men, reduces the likelihood that females will be physically active, and has negative consequences for state and private funding of women’s sports.
