What is it about?
New informal avenues of education are impacting formal school education and capitalizing on the anxieties of middle class families in diverse ways. One such avenue is the shadow education offered by private coaching institutes preparing IIT aspirants for the Joint Entrance Exam. These institutes appear to be using a new language of pedagogy and trying to establish themselves as an alternate system in the arena of education which threatens to make schools redundant. The article discusses the credentialing strategies of middle class families and shadow education institutes and their impact on formal schooling.
