What is it about?

A violent conflict is said to have deep and irreversible effects on the education of its young survivors. While earlier literature has looked at the macro issues pertaining to this area, like destruction of schools and relocation of survivors, this work uses the lived experiences of the survivors to look at deeper impacts of conflict on their education. Through the testimonies of survivors of 1984 anti-Sikh riots -- one of the worst cases of state-sponsored violence in the history of independent India -- this paper looks at processes within and outside schools that affect the education of survivors and concludes that such an impact is long-drawn and complex.
