Access to medicines is a basic right of patients. Generic Drugs provide greater access to medicines, specially in developing countries.However, despite lower price generic drugs do not prevail in Brazil so far.The paper addresses current situation to access to drugs and its complexity in a large country with free healthcare system.

We deeply analyse generic drugs market in Brazi providing data for decision-making, assisting health care managers, the pharmaceutical industry and pharmacies to improve the pharmaceutical care in the country
Perspectives
This paper give an overview of the main reasons that prevented generic drugs from leading the Brazilian market, so that health care administrators, public policy makers, pharmaceutical and generics market administrators and health care professionals could elaborate strategies to reverse this situation. Many other countries may have similar social-economic conditions making the data here available useful to them. We also explored strategies to overcome the problem of generic drugs access and this is also remarkable as increase of medicine prescriptions has arosen as one of major healthcare issues.
