What is it about?
This article explores the ecosystem for social enterprises in Malaysia. It employs mainly primary data gathered through interviews of six Business Incubators and Intermediaries and twenty social enterprises. This study found that the current social enterprise ecosystem is weak and still emerging and has yet to take a concrete shape. The absence of legal status for social enterprise is the single most important obstacle in unlocking the potential growth of social enterprise sector.

Why is it important?
This research is important as many studies have been done on social entrepreneurship in Malaysia. This study explores the ecosystem for social enterprises in Malaysia, by focussing on the attributes (features) of business incubators (BIs) and intermediaries (IMs); perceptions of BIs and IMs about various aspects of social enterprise ecosystem and the role of BIs and other IMs in fostering SE and meeting the inclusive growth objective of the country.
Perspectives
This research provided great opportunity to our research team to interact with the business incubators and intermediaries that are promoting social entrepreneurship in Malaysia and also different types of social enterprises, which helped us to gain deep insights into the social enterprise sector in Malaysia.
