Why is it important?
Compassion is one of the core value of nursing. Today's codes of ethics, standards of care, and health policy documents have highlighted the role of compassion in guiding nursing leadership, practice, and education. It contributes to greater adherence to recommended care, experiences with the care services, and better health outcomes. On the contrary, a lack of compassion leads to deprivation of patients’ basic rights to quality care, dissatisfaction of the care, deterioration of health condition.
Perspectives
This study proposed a conceptual framework indicating a broad perspective in defining and characterizing compassionate care, and recognized the centrality of compassion as a core value that should govern nursing practice. It is critical that nursing curriculum and teaching hospitals promote and integrate compassionate care as a nursing competency.
