What is it about?

A Science Centre show on sound and music is evaluated in terms of its impact on Grade 9 learners in South Africa. In particular, comparisons are made between groups of learners from different backgrounds: in this case: urban, township and rural schools.

Why is it important?

There is very little literature about learner understanding of sound and waves, and almost all of it comes from studies done in first world countries on tertiary students. Furthermore little literature exists on evaluating science shows or science centres, so this study attempts to fill an important gap.

Perspectives

I have enjoyed presenting a science show on sound and music for many years and it has been fascinating to step back from presenting and evaluate what impact it has on the audience. It was especially surprising to see just how different the experiences of the different groups were and it motivated me to see how we can better tailor our science centre visits to accommodate different groups.
