What is it about?

What was the Kyzylkum Desert like more than 3,000 years ago? Our study explores this question by examining sediments from an ancient channel stratigraphy. Although the area is now extremely dry, the remains preserved in the sediments tell us that a very different landscape once existed there. By studying micro- and macroscopic remains of plants and animals, together with charcoal and the characteristics of the sediments, we reconstructed the vegetation and environmental conditions that existed during the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age. Our results show that the ancient channel supported a riverine forest, known as a Tugai forest, with trees and other plants growing along the watercourse. Over time, this vegetation declined and was replaced by plants adapted to increasingly saline and dry conditions. The changes provide evidence of a major transformation of the local ecosystem in an already arid environment. The study also provides new chronological information for this poorly investigated region and highlights the value of combining different types of environmental evidence to reconstruct past landscapes. Understanding how ecosystems changed in the past can help us better appreciate the vulnerability and resilience of riverine environments in today's drylands.

Why is it important?

This study provides a rare glimpse into environmental change in one of the least investigated regions of Central Asia. Its main strength is the combination of evidence from plants, animals, sediments and fire proxies, which allows us to reconstruct a past ecosystem from several complementary perspectives. The study is also timely because riverine ecosystems in drylands are particularly vulnerable to environmental change. By showing how a riverine forest in the Kyzylkum Desert changed and eventually gave way to salt-tolerant vegetation more than 3,000 years ago, our results provide a long-term perspective on the sensitivity and resilience of dryland ecosystems to changing environmental conditions.

Perspectives

This study opens new opportunities for investigating how dryland ecosystems and human societies responded to environmental change in the past. Expanding this approach to other sites along the Zeravshan River and in the wider Kyzylkum region could reveal whether the environmental changes observed at our site were local or part of a broader regional transformation. Future studies combining palaeoecological, archaeological and chronological evidence could also help clarify the relationships between climate variability, changes in water availability, human activities and the development of dryland landscapes. A better understanding of these long-term interactions may provide valuable insights into the vulnerability and resilience of riverine ecosystems in arid regions today.
