The article explains how concerns with matters of crime were very important to the development of psychiatry. in the first half of the 19th century. It also how explains how psychological thinking was important to the development of psychiatry, in particular ideas about the relationship between psychological disorder and crime. The pressure of public opinion pushed psychiatry back towards more medical ideas.
