What is it about?

This was a qualitative study on HIV self-testing. We aimed to establish the views of pregnant women and their male partners on female-partner delivered HIV self-testing.

Why is it important?

Distribution of HIV self-test kits through female partners is gaining prominence and has been shown to improve male partner testing. We sought to find out if this approach would be acceptable for pregnant women and their male partner s in order to inform the design of a pilot HIV self-testing intervention that is currently underway.

Perspectives

I believe that use of women to deliver HIV self-test kits to male partners will improve HIV testing rates among men. Men will no longer have excuses of being busy and having no time to go for HIV testing at the health facilities. However, women need to be well prepared on how to deliver the kits, how to handle HIV discrepant results, and how to deal with the social consequences that may arise post-test.
