What is it about?

A new indexing motion program based on the Hermite interpolating polynomial is proposed to described the indexing motion and optimize the design of the curved slotted Geneva mechanism. The kinematic performance of the Geneva mechanism using the proposed new indexing motion program is much better than that obtained using the cycloidal, fifth-order polynomial and modified sine indexing motion programs.

Why is it important?

The proposed method can also be employed to the design of cam mechanisms.

Perspectives

The reason behind the use of the Hermite interpolating polynomial is that the design variables have the clear physical meanings and the proposed method is very suitable for mechanism optimization.
