What is it about?

Comparing different torque application methods effect on joint quality. The joint quality is determined by the scatter in clamp force.

Why is it important?

By choosing the type of torque application method during the design of the threaded fastener joint, the threaded fastener may be utilized in a more efficient way. Also, weight savings can be made with reduced cost and emissions as result

Perspectives

There is so much more to threaded fastening than just applying torque and having an accurate torque measurement in the tooling. The effect from friction has a much higher impact on the variation i bolt preload. By moving away from torque control as torque application method and instead use angle, gradient or elongation/clamp force control the effect from friction variation on the bolt preload will be much lower resulting in a higher quality joint.
