What is it about?

The capacity to diagnose and manage children's chronic illnesses in Mauritania has brought new challenges to how they understand their illnesses. We asked children to tell us about their experiences and to draw pictures to describe their feelings.

Why is it important?

Children are infrequently listened to in the health care services in Mauritania. We give a voice to these children. Our findings show how children minimise their symptoms and sufferings to maintain hope of a cure and to reduce the social impact of their illness.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a privilege for the authors, who come from different perspectives. A French anthropologist and a British medical doctor, united by a respect for children in Mauritania and a desire to see their care improved.
