What is it about?

This paper explores how contributions to local United Ways are affected by contributions to other nonprofits. By distinguishing between those organizations that have a high degree of market overlap with the United Ways and those that have less overlap, this paper makes an important contribution to understanding how the fundraising activity of other organizations both provides benefits and offers competition for local organizations.

Why is it important?

The nonprofit landscape continues to shift. As the number of nonprofits increases and donors have greater ability to select from a wide range of organizations, it is very important to understand the effect on the market structure.

Perspectives

United Ways play an important role in both raising and distributing resources. In many communities, the UW is the largest single funder of human services. Understanding how that system is changing is vital for promoting vibrant local responses to community needs.
