What is it about?

MIndfulness self-compassion provides family caregivers with a way to view their difficult caregiving situations. Mindfulness self-compassion helps dementia family caregivers work through their guilt and anger both in the moment and after difficult family caregiving situations occur. Family caregivers were very receptive to learning mindfulness self-compassion.

Why is it important?

Dementia family caregivers often experience guilt, anger, and lack confidence in their ability to continue providing care. Mindfulness self-compassion provides a neutral way of looking at difficult situations to help caregivers have a more positive outlook on their caregiving future.

Perspectives

This article was meaningful to write and reflect on dementia caregivers experience while learning mindfulness self-compassion. Dementia family caregivers often feel that current resources are not enough. This resonated throughout the project and was especially true when caregivers asked for the mindfulness self-compassion sessions to continue past the 8 week trial period. I hope that nurses will use their holistic practices to help dementia family caregivers learn self care.
