What is it about?

Unlike most research into professional doctorates, this offers students' perspectives on their experience. This paper articulates the challenges and obstacles that we experienced as students and how we negotiated these challenges.

Why is it important?

Our conclusions are particularly pertinent to professional doctorate programme leaders and other students. We have been open about what we found difficult and what helped us to complete our professional doctorates . The insights we offer can help programme leaders' with their future planning and provide students with some strategies that they may find helpful.

Perspectives

We very much enjoyed writing this paper together. Hearing of the experiences of other professional doctorate students at the start of our own studies would have been immensely helpful and we hope that sharing our perspectives in a frank and constructive way will enable other students to have a smoother journey.
