What is it about?

This research focuses on understanding the perspectives of men who are interested in smoking cessation about what what approaches will enable them to quit. In particular, we wanted to understand gender-related factors that influence tobacco use, and how these factors can be harnessed to strengthen smoking cessation programs for men.

Why is it important?

Although gender-related factors influence smoking patterns, there are few smoking cessation programs designed specifically for men. Men-friendly, tailored approaches may be more effective in motivating and supporting men's smoking reduction and cessation.

Perspectives

It is generally accepted that current approaches to health promotion have largely been unsuccessful at reaching men. This has promoted recent interest in developing novel approaches that play on men's interests and preferences to engage men in healthier lifestyles. I hope this article prompts others to think about how smoking cessation programs should be designed for different groups of men.
