What is it about?
This study examines alcohol misuse by intimate male partners and women's experience of domestic violence. The aim purpose was to explore if the association between alcohol misuse and domestic violence varies across different districts or counties in the country. In order to do this, we used geographically weighted regression analysis - a regression model that produces coefficient estimates for each district. The estimates were then visualized on the map of districts in Ghana to determine where the association is high or low.

Why is it important?
Although previous studies suggest women's experience of domestic violence is high in the three northern regions, our study shows that the effect of alcohol misuse and domestic violence is higher in southern Ghana, particularly districts in the south-western part of the country. Thus, it suggests broader contextual factors shape how socio-economic factors affect women's experience of domestic violence.
Perspectives
This article presents some of the novels ways we can move beyond the naive assumption of normal regression models. Using local or spatial statistical methods such as GWR enhances our understanding of how the association between factors of interest and outcomes changes across our study area.
