What is it about?
Ritual/Religious abuse refers to any form of abuse, including physical harassment, humiliation, and sexual abuse, occurring under the guise of religion/rites. We have shown that not only ritual/religious abuse increases the risk of developing dissociative disorders, but also it is one of the most important predictors of different types of dissociative disorders.

Why is it important?
The research in the field of ritual/religious abuse has been neglected for about two decades. But since we showed that it is one of the most important traumatic predictors of dissociation, it should be focused on for more exploration on its relationship to dissociation. Preventive measures should be taken into account too.
Perspectives
Any abuse and maltreatment under the guise of religion and rites might have irreversible psychological consequences on victims, especially if they are in their early years of life. So, preventive measures should be taken into account to reduce such a high risk of developing dissociative disorders.
