What is it about?

This paper explores the reasons why LGBTQ young people are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system with particular attention to queer girls and transgender youth. The paper also looks at LGBTQ young people's experiences with law enforcement and inside girls' juvenile justice facilities in New York. Attention is paid to LGBTQ young people's resilience and activism.

Why is it important?

While there is statistical data showing that LGBTQ youth in general, and LGBTQ girls in particular, are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system, prior to this research we had not heard LGBTQ youth's own accounts of: their experiences of being incarcerated, the pathways that led to their incarceration, their experiences in juvenile justice facilities, and their activism and survivorship.
