What is it about?

Rooming houses are often considered accommodation of last resort. However, some aspire to provide a good option for people affected by homelessness. We explored the experiences of workers and women who participated in an activity program in one such rooming house. The program contributed to overcoming social isolation and provided the women with opportunities for social contact, satisfying activities, and leadership.

Why is it important?

The legacy of homelessness can include loss of confidence and lack of access to recreational activities. Yet social, creative and physically active recreation are important for people affected by homelessness. It is important for funding bodies and service providers to recognise the importance of activity programs. This article provides an example of how to implement an activity program and what it can mean to participants.

Perspectives

This article reflects my continuing interest in the experiences of young people and women affected by homelessness. The research was conducted in partnership with the YWCA, with field work undertaken by Jennifer Malone and additional assistance from Dr Angela Murphy.
