What is it about?
Bone tissue engineering applications provide structures to repair the defected bone tissue parts. As a biomaterial, fish scales have great potential due to their similarity with the bone structure. For this purpose, a novel three-dimensional cotton wool-like biological materials were fabricated by using fish scale and PHBV polymer.

Why is it important?
This is the first report wherein fish scales were used within a nanofibrous matrix. Our findings show that incorporation of the fish scales on the nanofibrous matrix increased mechanical properties and mineralization which are the important factors for bone regeneration. Based on the in vitro test results, the composite scaffold exhibited improved bioactivity and biocompatibility. Consequently, fish scale added nanofibrous biomaterial can be evaluated as a candidate filling material for bone regeneration.
