What is it about?

Melatonin is an effective therapeutic resource in children with sleep disorders. However, we do not know how melatonin secretion rhythm is affected in the diverse primary sleep disorders. This paper analyzes different circadian patterns of urinary 6-sulphatoxymelatonin excretion in a group of children with diverse primary sleep disorders in comparison with a control group.

Why is it important?

Our results suggest two clear indications for melatonin administration: (1) the presence of a low melatonin production pattern and/or (2) a disturbed circadian rhythm. In addition, it highlights the importance of analyzing specific alterations of melatonin secretion in each sleep disorder before starting treatment.

Perspectives

Although there are many articles about the effectiveness of melatonin in the area of pediatric sleep disorders, this article means an original contribution to the recent literature. To our knowledge, the present study is the first in which specific alterations of aMT production patterns in children with different primary sleep disorders have been explored.
