What is it about?

The aim of this analysis is to compare the main factors that led to the choice of these sites as key places to Portuguese and British early Modern Maritime empires, how they developed to satisfy trade, political and social and what where their most significant problems.

Why is it important?

The comparative approach between British and Portuguese Maritime empires, specially focus on the emergence of colonial harbors is new. This contributes to a better understanding of the different European dynamics in the Atlantic during 16th -18th centuries and, thorough a multidisciplinary approach better archaeology, history and geomorphology, get a better understanding of different settlement processes in the Atlantic archipelagos.
