Why is it important?

Issues concerning inadequate uptake of oncology and Palliative care in Nigeria stemmed from poor economic conditions, social relationships, and dysfunctional health-care system, facilitated by government failures in their responsibilities.

Perspectives

This study has shown that financial hardship experienced by cancer patients in Nigeria and other similar context, dysfunctional Nigerian healthcare system and negative social network contributed to inadequate utilisation of palliative and oncology services. Thus, most of the patients resigned themselves to faith and death. We hope that this study will trigger national and international discussions and policies to promote the well being of this vulnerable population.
