What is it about?

The article describes why the adolescent children of immigrants have social challenges that are not shared by either their non-immigrant peers or by their parents. I use the theory of Uri Bronfenbrenner as a framework for making sense of their challenges.

Why is it important?

It helps those working with adolescent youth of immigrant parents better understand the challenges faced by those youth and think constructively about how to assist them.

Perspectives

While many developmental researchers have used Bronfenbrenner's framework to develop research projects, this article offers it as simply an interpretive framework for ministers and educators in the field. I have used it for years with my students, who have found it very helpful for understanding their own settings and the challenges therein.
