What is it about?

Social media cues often appear below or alongside stories. What influence can these have on news perception? Also, do these cues work differently based on whether it is a blog-like platform or a traditional news site-type platform? This is what the study seeks to find out.

Why is it important?

We need to understand how people are being informed in a digital age. Digital platform has introduced several things that were non-existent in traditional news era, including social media sharing cues (buttons that allow us to share the news story among circles on our social media pages). Blogs also came into being because of the digital platform. Understanding the effects of these "new" elements can help us shed some light on how people become informed online.

Perspectives

The study can help understand the effects of online cues and how that influences news perception. This is more of a heuristic processing of cues. More research should be done to replicate the findings, and especially understand the potential role of design quality of the social media cues.
