What is it about?
Anything you separate out of your waste becomes residue and can be recycled. If you do not separate anything and present your refuse as mixed waste, then it becomes trash and goes to landfill.

Why is it important?
The important aspect is vocabulary. Residue refers to separated recyclable items. Trash refers to mixed items that cannot be separated anymore. The whole idea is "do not mix".
Perspectives
I have started the "residue world cup" by teaching people not to mix their discards and by reaching 67% adherence in apartment buildings in Brazil. This means, I recycle two thirds of all domestic waste in the buildings. This is what I call the competition or the CUP. Anybody who can do better, please publish the result and thus participate in the competition.
