What is it about?

Self-care management of diabetes is challenging and often causes some emotional distress for the individual. In this study, we examined factors that influence this diabetes related distress among a group of adults who suffer disproportionately with Type 2 diabetes and have often experienced discrimination, African American adults.

Why is it important?

Our findings show the need to address unique stressors, such as perceived discrimination, among racial/ethnic groups to improve diabetes-related outcomes.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great pleasure with my collaborators. This article highlights the need to bring discrimination and trust in health provider into the conversation when we design programs to reduce health disparities.
